Kap Bambino: Synth-Clash Newbies

FREE DOWNLOAD
While it seems Peaches has gone soft serve with "I Feel Cream" - one of On the Beat's top records of the year by the way - maybe there's room for a new diva to take the electro-clash reigns. Enter Kap Bambino - a sythn-scream duo from France that'll bring the grrrl back into trash-core techno. The gang just dropped their first single "Batcaves" (video down below) on the states this week. "Lezard" comes off the band's yet-to-be-released, "Blacklist," LP.

On the Beat: Nov. 19-25

George Clinton headlines the Trenton War Memorial's Patriots Theatre
on Friday night.

The Faux Four are said to be an authentic representation of The Beatles’ live show – or what could be envisioned as their live sets had the Brits continued to tour after “Revolver” dropped in 1966. In fact, it’s the never-before-witnessed performances of post-Beatlemania records that’s earned the marveled-by-Broadway cover boys – coming together at the Sun National Bank Center (81 Hamilton Ave., Trenton) tonight - rave reviews over the years. Show starts at 6:30 p.m. Tickets cost $35, $45 and $50. All-ages.
"When you got a real type of thing going down, getting down,” you call in this captain of interstellar funk to the party to turn that mother out. Then before you know it you’re shaking your groove thang with the naked guy and getting funk-da-fried with a scruffy old dude in an adult diaper. Got the dog in you? Then it’s the Patriots Theatre at the War Memorial (1 Memorial Dr., Trenton) where you’re going to get busy tomorrow night. Dr. Funkenstein hits the stage at 7:30. Tickets cost $35, $45, $55, $65 and $75. All-ages.

PipeDreams

The Hamilton cover band “cry the midnight hour … more, more, more” with intoxicated, biker-babalicious leads. Nice! Its like Shirley Manson and Billie Idol hammered from a Rock Band binge. The group will have a few other rock-pop hits – from Carrie Underwood to Melissa Etheridge - up its sleeves when headlining McGuinn’s Place (1781 Brunswick Pike, Lawrence) tomorrow night. Show starts at 9. Tickets cost $5. 21-plus.

Ash Monday

The Jersey Shore crust-metal murderers who haunt like the Evil Dead fronting Social Decay headline Championships Sports Bar and Grill (931 Chambers St., Trenton) tomorrow night. Show starts at 9. Crasher, Bil Doe and the Reacharounds and The Communion round out the bill. Tickets cost $8. 21-plus.

The Trenton rocker’s smooth mix of white-boy soul, jazz and sexy R&B prompts the ’70s funk ass shaking typical of Average White Band and Tower of Power shows. Currently working on a new CD, the gang will try out new jams on The All Call Inn (214 Weber Ave., Ewing) crowd tomorrow night. Show starts at 9. Little John and DJ Bounce open. Tickets cost $5. 21-plus.

The Grip Weeds

The North Jersey power-pop rhythm addicts, whose sunny melodies spark memories of cheerful alt-rock radio stalwarts The Lemonheads and less bleak R.E.M., open for The Doughboys at The Record Collector (358 Farnsworth Ave., Bordentown) tomorrow. Show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $10 in advance, $12 at the door. All-ages.

Ventura Boulevard

Thousands run down this dream of being the next Tom Petty. These Jersey Shore copycats – headlining The Stone Pony (913 Ocean Ave., Asbury Park) tomorrow night – just cover Tom Petty instead. Show starts at 7:30. The Young Guns and Private Stock open. Tickets cost $10 in advance, $12 at the door. All-ages. Years Spent Cold-Abandon all hope

HOODLUM HELVIN 86 MySpace Video

Years Spent Cold

The tough-core titan’s full-blown chaos, rap-represented name-drops and manic metal mechanics tips its cap to underground hit-mongers Floorpunch and Biohazard. The machine-gun drumming and beasty vocals will certainly induce massive mosh-pitting and self-satisfactory chest-bumps Saturday afternoon at Championships Sports Bar and Grill (931 Chambers St., Trenton). Eulogy Records. Show starts at noon. Wisdom In Chains, Sicker Than Most, C.S.S. and Roger Klotz open. Tickets cost $10. All-ages.

Burning Jersey

The Hamilton rocker’s power metal gets abrasive in its spazzy choruses, but like Coheed & Cambria are able to maintain a melodic middle ground in the vocals and gifted guitar dancing during the most dramatic parts. After a summer tour and spot start at this summer’s Warped Tour, the guys return to their home away from home – Brewsters (529 Route 130, East Windsor) – on Saturday with a revised lineup and fresh tunes with a certain psycho-circus feel to them. Show starts at 2 p.m. A Clever Con, Audacity, Political Party Crashers and Shadowplay round out the bill. Tickets cost $8. All-ages.

Phantasm

The Philly playas like to fit their progressive-rock bulge into leather pants. Would remind you of The Mars Volta, until the Faith No More-fashioned metallic carnival-funk and slick turntable cuts kick in. And for that, it’s not so hard seeing the big-city invaders sharing the McGuinn’s Place (1781 Brunswick Pike, Lawrence) stage Saturday night with Lawrence ska-martians, Karma Bat!, who in itself sounds like a zombie Gwen Stefani whose gone batty on a Tilt-A-Whirl. Show starts at 9. Tickets cost $5. 21-plus.

Dewey Decimal and the System

A swig of country swing and a beer-bong of Americana-sozzled rock ’n’ roll gets these mountain men - hitting up Championships Sports Bar and Grill (931 Chambers St., Trenton) Saturday night - to the barnyard jamboree on time. Also for fans of Kings of Leon and My Morning Jacket. Show starts at 9. The Bad Notes, Sunchild & the Moonlight Flux and Vose round out the bill. Tickets cost $8. 21-plus.

Gleaming The Cube

The Westbury, N.Y.-natives are skate-punk straight down to their high-top Vans. Like you didn’t make that assumption based on their name alone? There’s some speed-metal break downs mixed in, too, so fans of Underdog and JFA should take note. But the guys – hitting up The All Call Inn (214 Weber Ave., Ewing) with 14 Points on Saturday – primary inspiration comes from old Bones Brigade videos and Steve Caballero’s ’80s punk pack, The Faction. You know that’s sound making a huge comeback these days in the punk underground, right? Show starts at 9 p.m. Take Today and Ominous Black play, too. Tickets cost $5. 21-plus.

Steve Wynn

The ’80s despondency in the Dream Syndicate singer’s lyrical depression on “The Day of Wine and Roses” will remind you of post-punk icons, Joy Division. Wynn – headlining The Record Collector (358 Farnsworth Ave., Bordentown) on Saturday - to cheer up on the grunge-rocking solo tip through the ’90s with a notable duet with Concrete Blonde’s Johnette Napolitano, but is known now for his work with R.E.M.’s Peter Buck in Seattle’s The Baseball Project. Show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $10 in advance, $12 at the door. All-ages.

Screaming Females

The New Brunswick noise-rock trio offers up Grace Slick-meets-Kathleen Hanna fem-punk eruptions for Boss Hog followers. Also fun for fans of psychedelic riot-girlie outfits under the Bikini Kill umbrella and old school Sonic Youth. The Hub City sensations headline Asbury Lanes (209 4th Ave., Asbury Park) on Saturday. Show starts at 6 p.m. Full Fancy, No Connection, Sick Fix, Black Kites and Human Failures open. Jersey punks The Kanamits will also come together for the first time in a while. Tickets cost $8. All-ages.

Moscow Girls

The Frantic’s second incarnation will rip it up, break it up and shake it up again! Split for about a year ago to concentrate on separate projects ranging from a tour with The AKA’s to running amok in local super groups Honah Lee and Minnesota’s Calling, the Trenton rockers - whose British Invasion-inspired rebel yells encompass elements of Superdrag, Arctic Monkeys and Blur – will return to its original stomping grounds for a free, one-night only reunion show in The Mill Hill Basement (300 S. Broad St., Trenton) Wednesday night. Hopefully it’s not the last time seeing crew reformed. Show starts at 8. Honah Lee and DJ Johnny Utah are also on the bill. 21-plus.

David Johansen

The glam-rock legend from the New York Dolls promises to “explore the more soulful side of singing” when headlining the Patriot Theatre at the Trenton War Memorial (1 Memorial Dr., Trenton) Wednesday night. Show starts at 7. Tickets cost $25. All-ages.

Deejay Non-Chalant

The Philly mix masher puts his Crookers remixes on the back burner to fire a barrage of b-more-backed ’80s music at McGuinn’s Place (1781 Brunswick Pike, Lawrence) for the biggest party night of the year. Outfield’s “Josie?” Check! Eddie Money? Got it. “It’s Tricky?” Oh, yeah! Eddie Murphy’s “My Girl Likes to Party All the Time?” You better believe it! First 25 people get a free copy of the “Meatballs: 8-ighty-8” mix tape. Sets start at 9. Tickets cost $1. 21-plus.

Among Criminals

The Bucks band’s smoke-stained roots-rock and complex drum-jams radiates a groovy Dispatch vibe. Also fit for fans of The Police, Bob Marley and Sublime. The guys headline The All Call Inn’s (214 Weber Ave., Ewing) free pre-Thanksgiving bash Wednesday night. Show starts at 9. Avra opens. 21-plus.

Clifford Adams Organ Jazz Trio

A little trivia. What Trenton-born trombonist starred in The Stylistics’ horn section for its 1973 world tour? The same jazz giant whose solos were featured in Kool & the Gang’s “Joanna,” and whose trio headlines The Record Collector (358 Farnsworth Ave., Bordentown) Wednesday night. Show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $10 in advance, $12 at the door. All-ages.

Nicole Atkins

The Neptune singer’s self-described “pop-noir” exemplifies the gloom found in PJ Harvey with the glee of Jenny Lewis. Her berceuse jazzy numbers also have a Norah Jones feel to them, but in the Grammy winner’s recent edgy-but-beautiful reincarnation. Atkins headlines the Stone Pony (913 Ocean Ave., Asbury Park) Wednesday night. Show starts at 7. River City Extension and Sikamor Rooney play, too. Tickets cost $16.50 in advance, $18 at the door.

Scott Frost’s On The Beat concert listing appears in The Trentonian every Thursday. If your band is playing around town, email the On the Beat webline at djscott111@aol.com.

On the Beat: Nov. 12-18

Imagination Movers
The Playhouse Disney kids-bop sensations preach manners and honesty through addictive tunes in a style they describe “Red Hot Chili Peppers meet Captain Kangaroo.” They also wear matching jumpsuits like Devo used to do and jump really high on stage - and that’s as inviting as a big wet kiss from Clifford The Big Red Dog to the hordes of children strung out on the New Orleans band’s positivity-through-rock message. The kid’s incorporation hit the Trenton War Memorial’s Patriot’s Theatre (1 Memorial Dr., Trenton) this afternoon. Show start at 4. Tickets cost $18, $28, $38 and $48. All-ages. "Hot Pants"_The Dead & Gone Side Projects MySpace Video
The country-fried-punk speed dealers peddle lightning-fast rockabilly a la The Reverend Horton Heat – like when they covered “Stop That Pigeon.” The trio burns down The Court Tavern (124 Church St., New Brunswick) tonight with Trenton’s FreeDoom and Honah Lee. Show starts at 9. Tickets cost $5. 21-plus.
Raymond Strife’s shifty hip-hop flow “isn’t so innocent. Even if he goes impendent, he’s rocking the show infinite.” The Lawrence rapper’s silly-yet-smart rhymes, head-nodding basement beats and funk-in-drublic lyrical shenanigans also reveal an appreciation for The Alkaholics, Murs and RA The Rugged Man. His comical prose highlights tomorrow’s show at McGuinn’s Place (1781 Brunswick Pike, Lawrence) with DEMO. Show starts at 9. Hip-hoppers Angels to Some, Devils to Others, Money$ide, Indiana’s Black Shirley – noisemakers similar to The Dwarves – and DJ Swiss CHZ round out the bill. Tickets cost $5. 21-plus.
The Ocean County audio bullies run the gamut on metal subgenres – even sliding sonic laser blasts in its more traditional metal death sets. The beach beasts hit up Championships Sports Bar and Grill’s (931 Chambers St., Trenton) Friday the 13th Metal Massacre tomorrow night. Show starts at 9. Siberia, Embracing Chaos, Face Down Dead and Von Kull play, too. Tickets cost $8. 21-plus.
The emcee’s “stomach-piercing bluntness” and erotic poetry practice will give you a tummy ache or the munchies - you pick. The Ewing entrepreneur hits the All Call Inn (214 Weber Ave., Ewing) stage tomorrow night to celebrate the release of his “Dirty Jerzey Fresh” clothing line. Show starts at 9:25. Tickets cost $5.
Not too many come to area with a resume like this Small Faces keyboarder. And only one can say they’re the widow of Keith Moon’s aesthetic ex-wife. The Brit - headlining The Record Collector (358 Farnsworth Ave., Bordentown) tomorrow night – is an icon to say the least. After Small Faces broke down in 1969, McLagan started Faces with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood; then spent the next couple decades touring with The Rolling Stones, playing the organ with Wood and Keith Richards in The New Barbarians and in the studio with Bruce Springsteen, Joe Cocker, Bob Dylan and Jackson Browne. And since ’97, McLagan’s been in Billy Bragg’s band. Show starts at 7:30 p.m. The Catholic Girls, open. Tickets cost $25 in advance, $27 at the door. All-ages.
Judas Priestess
Chicks draped in leather, bellowing late ’70s heavy metal with homoerotic undertones? “Breaking the Law,” in deed. But a pretty cool idea, too. The ladies in black headline the Stone Pony (913 Ocean Ave., Asbury Park) tomorrow night. Show starts at 7:30. Mikell’s Plot, The Red Desert, Lame Radio Station, Goodbye Friday, Between You and Me and Sundown Conspiracy round out the bill. Tickets cost $10 in advance, $12 at the door. All-ages.
The Lancaster metal-core crazies may cute, pretty-boy smiles on when doing photo shoots, but they pack quite a wallet – poisoning the eardrums with neck-snapping breakdowns, machine-gun drumming and viperous vocals you get from Every Time I Die. The guys break-it-down in flip-flops and there’s some melody in the rhythm guitar and typical air-punching choruses, too, but that’s what you should expect from every team of a high school hardcorers booked to pump-up the jams at Championships Sports Bar and Grill (931 Chambers St., Trenton) on any given Saturday. Show starts at 4 p.m. I Am History, Signals Under Seas, The Abstract, An Open Ended Sky, A Dream Worth Dying For and The Waking Alley open. Tickets cost $10 in advance, $12 at the door. All-ages.
The Long Islander’s alt-rock pulse is laced with sugary teen-pop lullaby’s that begs for female attention. Pretty wimpy - but that’s what gets high school kids play these days. They sound like a mix of Metrostation and The Script - and headline The Mill Hill Basement’s (300 S. Broad St., Trenton) first all-ages show on Saturday night. Show starts at 5 p.m. Set In Color, The Glory Days and Reckless round out the bill. Tickets cost $5. All-ages.
The Philly psychedelic garage rockers, who in the late ’60s were fronted by Todd Rundgren, headline The Record Collector (358 Farnsworth Ave., Bordentown) Saturday night. Inspired by Cream and taking their name from The Yardbirds’ song “The Nazz are Blue,” Rundgren left the group in 1969 after two albums to “Bang on His Drum All Day.” The group fizzled by 1970, but resurfaced in 2006 under the control of original member Stewkey (Robert Antoni), who still rocks out to Rundgren-NAZZ’s most recognizable tune, “Hello, It’s Me.” Show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $15 in advance, $18 at the door. All-ages. Dramarama Paul MySpace Video
The 1985 new wave hit “Anything Anything (I’ll Give You Back)” saw a revitalization in Trenton a year or so ago when local rockers Philo (now Honah Lee) started covering the song. It was on the soundtrack to “A Nightmare of Elm Street 4: Dream Master,” too, is still a top request on L.A.’s KROQ and is just one of those songs that gets stuck in your head all day. Gotcha! Now, “settle down, settle down, settle down.” The Jersey-born power-rockers reformed in 2003 for the VH1 reality show “Bands Reunited” and play a couple shows a year, including Saturday’s show at The Wonder Bar (1213 Ocean Ave., Asbury Park). Show starts at 7 p.m. The Joe Rapolla Band, Ziggy Shock and Jon Caspi open. Tickets cost $20 in advance, $25 at the door. All-ages.
The Floridian ska-punk party-poppers get their skank on at The Stone Pony (913 Ocean Ave., Asbury Park) Monday night. Show starts at 6 p.m. The Casualties and The Swellers play, too. There will also be a screening of Kevin Lyman’s Warped Tour 15th Anniversary documentary. Tickets cost $22 in advance, $25 at the door. All-ages.
Scott Frost’s On The Beat concert listing appears in The Trentonian every Thursday. If your band is playing around town, email the On the Beat webline at djscott111@aol.com.

On the Beat Nov. 5-Nov.11

The Two Man Gentlemen play Bordentown's Record Collector
this weekend.
The Cincinnati demon-core death-dealer’s grim reaping infests Championships Sports Bar and Grill (931 Chambers St., Trenton) this afternoon. The heavy-metal heathens were signed to Metal Blade Records in 2008 after earning its hardcore stripes through road-warrior romps with The Black Dahlia Murder, The Red Chord and – On the Beat faves – Dead To Fall. “The Resting Sonata” is the band’s latest release. The thrash after school special starts at 4. Sicker Than Most, Esquilax, Kill The Evidence, Descend The Architect, In Wake of the Plague and Strychnia open. Tickets cost $10 in advance, $12 at the door. All-ages.
The 61-year-old sax legend has been bumping the bebop beat since his Ewing High School days. Now he’s considered the No. 1 sax player in the world. A member of both Buddy Rich’s and Doc Severinsen’s big bands, Cole says the theory behind his jazz orchestra, “is the concept and sound of an 18-piece big band using only seven instruments, four of which are horns.” He said the idea of the seven-piece “big band” allows the group “plenty of room for improvisation” as if they were in a quartet setting. Cole, playing Bordentown’s Record Collector (358 Farnsworth Ave.) tonight, recorded his first LP, “Battle of the Saxes, Vol. 1,” in 1978 - ushering Charlie Parker’s classic style into the ’80s and beyond. Show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $15 in advance, $17 at the door. All-ages.
The Newtowner’s finger-snapping mood pop and dream-folk shoegazes give off this feeling of Hope Sandoval taming the “Where The Wild Things Are” soundtrack. Also for fans of sleepier Jenny Lewis, PJ Harvey and White Stripes tunes and the background music to Wes Anderson movies. The foursome softens up an electric – and wildly eclectic – lineup at The All Call Inn (214 Weber Ave., Ewing) tomorrow night, that includes art-punks DEMO (Pats!e, Towers Open Fire), Lawrence rapper To Live and Die in NJ (a Cage incarnate) and Money$ide. Show starts at 9 p.m. Tickets cost $5. 21-plus.
The power-pop pusher’s carefree harmonizing and Velvet Crush hooks exploit all that we love about Superdrag, Matthew Sweet and pre-war Beatles. The Jersey guys get their grin on at McGuinn’s Place (1781 Brunswick Pike, Lawrence) tomorrow night. Show starts at 9. 58 Fury plays, too. Tickets cost $5. 21-plus.
Rebel Nights
The Jersey rockers, whose melody-enriched alt-punk and working-class attitude will remind you of Alkaline Trio, Jimmy Eat World and “White Light, White Heat, White Trash”-era Social Distortion, headline Championships Sports Bar and Grill (931 Chambers St., Trenton) tomorrow night. Show starts at 9 p.m. Less Than Average, Maya’s Ruin, Lost In Society and As Summer Fades open. Tickets cost $8. 21-plus.

The Hot Water Music doppelganger’s unyielding vocal sandblasts and rhythmically-loaded guitar dances spearhead a Hamilton post-punk beach invasion of Asbury Lanes (209 4th Ave., Asbury Park) tomorrow night with ex-Philo, Frantic and Rape Babies players, Honah Lee. Show starts at 8. Philly’s The Holy Mess and Oklahoma’s Red City Radio play, too. Tickets cost $10. All-ages. The Two Man Gentlemen
The Long Island tag team use Dixieland antics and ragtime jazz to sell its vaudeville elixir. Kind of a weird duo, who interestingly enough opened for Bob Dylan over the summer. There’s one guy on banjo. The other is on upright bass. Both play kazoos, which they duel with from time to time. They have a song about Howard Taft. Another about drip-drying with your favorite gal. Intrigued yet? Looks like something you’d see walking down The Magic Kingdom’s Main Street right before the Disneyland Parade. Or if you’re keen on the Squirrel Nut Zippers, hit up their show at The Record Collector (358 Farnsworth Ave., Bordentown) tomorrow night. Show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $12. All-ages.
The Old Bridge jammers .moe-down Championships Sports Bar and Grill (931 Chambers St., Trenton) Saturday afternoon. Show starts at noon. Atlantic Run, Skattered, Nuclear Shakedown, Principai, Along Those Lines and J. Webb round out the bill. Tickets cost $10. All-ages.
The Trenton tech-metal soul-reaper’s hardcore sorcery takes technical genius to wage war with such pulverizing force. If a devilish grin brews when bracing for a roller coaster or during one of Between the Buried and Me’s barbaric break downs, then you’ll love these mayhem makers, playing The All Call Inn (214 Weber Ave., Ewing) Saturday night. Show starts at 9. Earth’s Final Sunset, Ghost of the Machine, Honor Amongst Evil and Jonne Blue round out the bill. Tickets cost $5. 21-plus.

The Latin jazz ensemble, who’s Cuban-influenced percussions and stylized horns infusions seen in hip collectives like Ozomatli have become a popular fixture of Trenton’s Capital City Market summer celebrations, headline the New Jersey State Museum’s (205 W. State St., Trenton) “I Am Trenton” celebration on Saturday night. Show starts at 8 p.m. A suggested donation of $10 per person, $15 per couple will be collected at the door. Children under 12 are free. All-ages.
Dreaded metal and a spitting image of Sepultura in sound, too? That’s never a bad thing, especially at the area’s top hardcore stomp – Championships Sports Bar and Grill (931 Chambers St., Trenton). The Connecticut fearsome hit up the bar with Night and Tomorrow Never Dies at 9 p.m. Saturday. Tickets cost $8. 21-plus.
The Jersey City guitarist and current Robert Gordon band mate strums a ’50s-style southern rock blend of Elvis Presley and Brian Setzer. In fact, when the Rockabilly Express slides into Bordentown’s Record Collector (358 Farnsworth Ave.) Saturday night, Ryan will have Gary Setzer – the Stray Cats’ brother – on drums. Show starts at 7:30 p.m. The Ultra Kings open. Tickets cost $11 in advance, $14 at the door. All-ages.
The Lambertville sextet’s Flamenco-folk percussion parade marches into The Stone Pony (913 Ocean Ave., Asbury Park) Saturday night. The show starts at 7:30 and features notable New Brunswick bands WUPA, The New Arcane, Only Living Boy and Nymphomatics. Tickets cost $10. All-ages. the casualties

You really can’t call yourself hardcore until you were personally flipped off by these legendary New York City gutter punks – boot-kicking your pansy ass and harvesting bad behavior at Championships Sports Bar and Grill (931 Chambers St., Trenton) Sunday night. Grimy fun for the whole squatter family, and one of the smelliest shows you’ll ever go to. Plus, Jorge Herrera still kicks it with this totally rad, sometime multi-colored Mohawk – a real one, too, not those totally bogus Fro-hawks that dude from the Black Eyed Peas brought to urban America – and that’s a sight to see. Show starts at 5 p.m. Guilt Trip!, Post No Bills, FreeDoom, Ash Monday and Too Much Too Fast Too Soon are also on the bill. Tickets cost $15. All-ages. Scott Frost’s On The Beat concert listing appears in The Trentonian every Thursday. If your band is playing around town, email the On the Beat webline at djscott111@aol.com.

Simian Mobile Disco feat. Beth Ditto - Cruel Intentions (Joker Remix) by electrodisiac
Simian Mobile Disco make for the perfect party music for Halloween in Philly - even with the Phils lost to The Yankees transpiring in the background. But before that, the Brit techno good guys went totally Mischief Night on Webster Hall in New York the night before. Check out the video I shot. Awesome, right?

New York's Charetta play Six Flags on Friday
Vampy leading lady Angelina Del Carmen gives these pop-goth New Yorkers - headlining Six Flags Great Adventure’s (1 Six Flags Blvd., Jackson) Dead & Local stage tomorrow night – the eye candy it takes to be Flyleaf, and the melodies, too. Also for fans of Otep, Evanesence, trick-or-treating as your favorite “Twilight” character and fishnet gloves. Sets start at 7:30 p.m. Free with admission to the park. All-ages. Runs In the Blood preview Charetta (Album Now Available On iTunes) | MySpace Video
Captured! By Robots invades Bordentown on Thursday.
Walt Disney’s worst nightmare has come true – the anti-“It’s a Small Word.” What you got here is a single-manned animatronic puppet punk band built in the spirit of the now budget boat ride performed with the storyline of a cast of living trash cans aimed at human domination through an invisible audio gas of bad ’80s covers. It’s really a sight to see, horn section and anti-Earth comedy sketches, in all. The live show - landing at our own music loony bin, The Record Collector (358 Farnsworth Ave., Bordentown), tonight - looks like the Herbie Hancock “Rock It” video brought back to life. The cyborg lead singer and robot engineer, JBOT, was in ska whacko’s Skankin’ Pickle and The Blue Meanies, but you’ll fine third-wave skanking from these metalheads. Something to YouTube, really. Show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $10 in advance, $12 at the door. All-ages.
Intoxicated demon’s JD from Black Label Society and Monster Magnet’s Atomic Bob get sauced on Jack Daniels-soaked, metal-leather at The Stone Pony (913 Ocean Ave., Asbury Park) tonight. Show starts at 7. Tickets costing $15 include a free copy of Cycle of Pain’s new CD. All-ages.
Three reasons to go to Championships Sports Bar and Grill (931 Chambers St., Trenton) tomorrow night to see this fiery Hamilton trio: Totally hot tattooed babe on bass, the lead singer feels Scott Weiland’s pain and addiction – to grunge-era rocking and rolling that is - and because a frozen smoothie of Motley Crew, Misfits, Smashing Pumpkins and Kiss is tangy as hell. Show starts at 8 p.m. The Big Apology, headline. Running With Karma, Picto, Makeshift Lullaby, Not Really and Tempting Christ round out the bill. Tickets cost $10. 21-plus.
The New Hope, Pa., dos e’ do-ers bring Phish jams and Jamiroquai funk to McGuinn’s (1781 Brunswick Pike, Lawrence) Mischief Night bash tomorrow night. Show starts at 9 p.m. Tickets cost $5. 21-plus.
The Philly songstress’ cowgirl blues seem to ease the pain in my ears from all these metal bands infecting my column each week. Soothing, small-town, singer-songwriting stuff with slight Bjork influences found in the “A Thousand Words” orchestration. Like sitting by the fake fire at Crackle Barrel with a cup of hot coco – or the hamlet’s quaint record store, The Record Collector (9358 Farnsworth Ave., Bordentown tomorrow night. Show starts at 7:30 p.m. Caleb Hawley and John Schmidt open. Tickets cost $10 in advance, $12 at the door. All-ages. The thought-to-extinct Whiskey-punk outfit featuring ex-members of The Frantic, Signal Effect, BurnWest and None More Black recently sucked down a formaldehyde social in its attempt to rise from the dead their bar-blues, country-concoction of Bruce Springsteen and The Gaslight Anthem for the area’s wildest costume party in The Mill Hill Basement Halloween night. Show starts at 9 p.m. Rare appearances from Nashville’s Sound and Shape and Trenton punk rockers The Great Explainer and The Ruining are also set to play. Misfits cover band, Horror Biz, plays, too. Tickets cost $5.
The Trenton brute-metal beast’s zombified translation of Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” – on tap for Championships Sports Bar and Grill’s (931 Chambers St., Trenton) Thriller Night, Saturday – is habit forming … if you crave the braaaaiiiinnnnns of a murdered moonwalker! The place to be if you like Pantera and “Saw” movies, hate sleeves and are impervious to headaches. Show starts at $8. Eyes of Suffering, Exhaling Decay, Sicker Than Most, Tomorrow Never Dies and The Worst Is Yet to Come play, too. Tickets cost $8 in costume, $10 without. 21-plus.
Pixie sticks, Lemonheads, Gin Blossoms and sweet guy-girl pop-core tug of wars make the Trenton band’s MySpace bouncer, “What Good Am I,” an infectious alternative to the mayhem of Halloween – where they’ll headline McGuinn’s Place (1781 Brunswick Pike, Lawrence). Show starts at 9 p.m. The Shakers play, too. 21-plus.
This Fab Gore do Beatles songs from the living dead’s perspective. Here’s the lyrics to “Hey Jude” … whoops … “Hey Food”: “Hey food/I need you bad/just like King Kong, don’t need a sweater/remember, when I am eating your heart/I’ll rip you apart to eat you better.” “Ate Brains a Week” is another chuckler. But the coup d’état to all Zombeatles shows is, “All I Need Is Brain.” The Wisconsin group – infecting The Record Collector (358 Farnsworth Ave., Bordentown) Halloween night – gained worldwide notoriety when its “Hard Day’s Night of the Living Dead” video was picked by Rob Zombie as one of the freak’s top YouTube Halloween video picks of 2007. And in case you were wondering, the guys let Eat Breast into the group so they can spell Dingo Scarr for his flesh-feeding frenzy. Show starts at 7:30 p.m. The Gomers play, too. Tickets cost $15 in advance, $17 at the door. 18-plus.
The Garden State catamaran creeps onto Six Flags Great Adventure’s (1 Six Flags Blvd., Jackson) Dead & Local stage Saturday night with an engine gassed up on full-throttle Americana and a hard-nosed girl on leads with heart – and a little Ann Wilson, too. Sets start at 7:30 p.m. Free with admission to the park. All-ages.
Jamie Jasta is hate-breeding again with his Stillborn Records - this time giving life to these nu-core straight-edgers, headlining Championships Sports Bar and Grill (931 Chambers St., Trenton) Sunday afternoon. Like their temporaries in Every Time I Die and Bury Your Dead – who they’ll jump on tour with next – TWWK attack like a rabid dog with a taste for flesh, but throwback to Hatebreed’s poly-poignant early days and the fix-the-system-or-die spirit of Earth Crisis and Warzone. Show starts at 2 p.m. In Wake of The Plague, Total Ruination, Dreams of Dahmer, Descent the Architect, Locked Together In Hatred and The Necrophiliac Yacht Club play, too. Tickets cost $10 in advance, $12 at the door. All-ages.
The power-popping Squeeze guitarist headlines The Record Collector (358 Farnsworth Ave., Bordentown) Tuesday night. Tempting, huh? Show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $35 in advance, $38 at the door. All-ages.
Scott Frost’s On The Beat concert listing appears in The Trentonian every Thursday. If your band is playing around town, email the On the Beat webline at djscott111@aol.com.
